Cardiac Arrhythmia Surgery

(MAZE Procedure)

The MAZE procedure, also known as Maze surgery, is a surgical procedure to treat atrial fibrillation (AFib), an abnormality of the electrical system of the heart, during other types of cardiac surgery. The procedure is performed by cardiothoracic surgeons who make incisions in the right and left atria (the upper chambers of the heart). As these incisions heal scar tissue is formed which disrupts the electrical impulses that cause the abnormal heart rhythm.
