San Antonio Regional Hospital was named one of the nation’s top 50 cardiovascular hospitals by IBM Watson Health™. This distinction recognizes top performance based on a balanced scorecard of publicly available clinical and operational metrics and data. The 2019 study included 989 U.S. hospitals with cardiovascular service lines. San Antonio was compared to a peer group of 423 non-teaching community hospitals and was one of only 20 community hospitals nationwide and one of only two community hospitals in California to make the list. According to the IBM Watson Health study, the 50 hospitals honored by this award demonstrated:

  • Significantly higher inpatient survival rates
  • Fewer patient complications
  • Higher 30-day survival for AMI (acute myocardial infarction) and CABG (coronary artery bypass graft)
  • Fewer readmissions for AMI, CABG, and heart failure
  • Lower average length of stay
  • Reduced total cost per patient case

San Antonio Regional Hospital has been recognized by Anthem Blue Cross with a Blue Distinction® Centers+ (BDC+) for Maternity Care designation, as part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program. In 2020, the Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care Program was expanded beyond traditional outcome measures to include assessments of internal quality improvement, data collection and dissemination, and internal protocols that better address clinical quality and equity issues in maternity care. 


San Antonio Regional Hospital has been recognized with the 2019 Women’s Choice Award® as one of America’s Best Hospitals for orthopedics, heart, stroke, and cancer. These evidence-based designations are the only awards that identify the country’s best healthcare institutions based on robust criteria that consider both clinical excellence and female patient satisfaction.

The Orthopedic Institute at San Antonio Regional Hospital, which includes its Joint Replacement Center, met the robust criteria for selection as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Orthopedics, and is a recipient of the 2019 Women’s Choice Award®. To qualify for the award, hospitals must provide comprehensive orthopedic services such as arthroscopy and joint replacement, as well as offering MRI and physical therapy services onsite. In addition to achieving high marks for its clinical results in orthopedics, San Antonio received top patient satisfaction measures including patient recommendation, patient recovery information, and patient education.

The Women’s Choice Award® for Heart Care signifies that San Antonio Regional Hospital is in the top 9% of 4,812 U.S. hospitals offering heart care services. San Antonio performed well clinically with regard to heart care measures, but also had a high recommendation rate, which women have identified as a very important indicator when selecting a hospital. Recognized hospitals must offer at least six of the following services: cardiac catheterization laboratory, cardiac rehabilitation, cardiac surgery, carotid stenting, coronary interventions, electrophysiology, vascular interventions, vascular surgery and coronary intensive care (CCU). Hospitals are selected only if they perform well clinically with regard to heart care measures reported to Medicare, but also have a high Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) recommendation score.  All data used to determine the award recipients is objective and evidence based. 

San Antonio Regional Hospital was also named a recipient of the 2019 Women’s Choice Award®, as one of America’s Best Stroke Centers. This recognition means that the hospital is in the top 8% of the 4,812 U.S. hospitals offering stroke care services. To achieve this distinction, San Antonio met stringent clinical criteria such as mortality rates and readmission rates, as well as patient satisfaction scores that exceed the national average. 


San Antonio Regional Hospital is one of America’s Best Hospital for Cancer Care as determined by the Women Certified organization. Receiving the 2019 Women’s Choice Award® means that San Antonio is among the top 9% of hospital in the national accredited by the American College of Surgeon’s Commission on Cancer. This designation also requires high recommendation ratings for patient satisfaction from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The award methodology includes clinical performance among hospitals with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hospice services, and/or major research programs.

Blue Cross Blue Shield has recognized San Antonio Regional Hospital as a Blue Distinction Center+ for Hip and Knee Replacement for 2020. This designation recognizes healthcare providers that demonstrate expertise in delivering quality and affordable healthcare to meet consumers’ specialty care needs—safely, effectively, and cost-efficiently. In addition to meeting established quality thresholds, hospitals that receive the plus (+) designation must also demonstrate better cost-efficiency compared to their peers. 


2020-IVDB-RCBest-Logo120x131 For the 10th consecutive year, San Antonio Regional Hospital received a Reader’s Choice Award naming it the Best Hospital in the Inland Valley by Daily Bulletin newspaper readers. The Reader’s Choice Awards are coordinated each year by the Southern California News Group. Their readers identify the best of the best – the best people, places, and services in the Inland Valley.


San Antonio Regional Hospital’s stroke care has also been recognized with the 2020 Get With the Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. The award is given to hospitals that demonstrate 85 percent or higher compliance in each of the Association’s seven Get With The Guidelines - Stroke achievement measures.  Hospitals with Gold status have demonstrated this compliance for 24 consecutive months. 
When treating a possible stroke, seconds count. The guidelines were developed to improve stroke care by promoting consistent adherence to the latest scientific treatment guidelines which helps speed delivery of treatment for patients.  San Antonio’s stroke response team members work diligently to reduce treatment time – from the moment the patient arrives in our emergency department, until the medical team can diagnose a stroke and administer the lifesaving tPA clot busting drug. This reduces the disabling effects of stroke and saves lives. 

acr_bicoe_sealThe Women’s Breast & Imaging Center at San Antonio Regional Hospital has been awarded the Breast Center of Excellence distinction by the American College of Radiology (ACR). This distinction is considered ACR’s Gold Standard of Accreditation and indicates that the facility has met the highest level of imaging quality and radiation safety. This includes a rigorous review of personnel qualifications, equipment requirements, quality assurance, and quality control procedures. The ACR accreditation process is overseen by board-certified, expert radiologists and medical physicists in advanced diagnostic imaging. The ACR is the largest and oldest imaging accrediting body in the U.S. and a professional organization of 40,000 physicians.

For almost a decade, San Antonio’s Women’s Breast & Imaging Center has been helping women screen for and find breast cancers early, when treatments are most effective. The hospital is committed to staying on the forefront of breast imaging technology, including the latest generation of 3D mammography equipment. 


San Antonio Regional Hospital has always been committed to educating new mothers on the health benefits of breastfeeding. However, the hospital goes beyond education to provide additional support that helps new mothers achieve success in their choice to breastfeed. In recognition of this commitment, San Antonio is among the elite group of hospitals in California to receive a Baby Friendly designation from the World Health Organization. This achievement recognizes that San Antonio goes beyond supporting breastfeeding during the hospital stay; its Healthy Beginnings Newborn Feeding Center continues to support new families after discharge with one-on-one counseling and support groups provided by internationally certified lactation educators and consultants.

San Antonio Regional Hospital has been recognized as a Platinum-Level Fit-Friendly Worksite by the American Heart Association (AHA). The hospital’s 4URHealth employee wellness program meets the criteria for the AHA award by offering employees physical activity and healthy eating options at the workplace and promoting an overall culture of health and wellness. 4URHealth programs include annual screenings, personalized health and wellness coaching, and access to a variety of healthy nutrition, exercise, and mental resiliency activities.

San Antonio Regional Hospital was named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals® by Thomson Reuters, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare. The award recognizes hospitals that have achieved excellence in clinical outcomes, patient safety, patient satisfaction, financial performance, and operational efficiency. San Antonio was also among the inaugural recipients of the Thompson Reuters’ Everest Award recognizing significant and sustained performance over five years.
