Care That Grows With You

Introducing the Geriatrics Clinic at San Antonio Regional Hospital’s Lewis Center of Aging

Growing older brings wisdom, perspective, and a lifetime of stories. It can also bring new health questions: a growing list of medications, a diagnosis or two to keep track of, a fall that shook your confidence, or a memory lapse that left you or someone you love wondering, “Is this normal?”

Those questions deserve a doctor who specializes in answering them. That is why San Antonio Regional Hospital created the Geriatrics Clinic at our new Lewis Center of Aging in Rancho Cucamonga, a place designed from the ground up for older adults and the families who care for them.

Meet Dr. Ecler Jaqua

Ecler E. Jaqua, MD, MBA, FAAFP, AGSF, FACLM, DABOM, AAHIVS, serves as Medical Director of the SARH Center of Aging. Ecler E. Jaqua, MD, MBA, FAAFP, AGSF, FACLM, DABOM, AAHIVS, serves as Medical Director of the SARH Lewis Center of Aging. She is an Associate Professor of Family and Geriatric Medicine and Program Director of the OPTI-West SARH Family Medicine Residency, where she trains the next generation of physicians.

Dr. Jaqua’s path to geriatrics began early. Originally from Brazil, she entered medical school at seventeen at The Lutheran University of Brazil, drawn by a lifelong passion for caring for people at every stage of life. She completed her Family Medicine residency at Loma Linda University Health, serving as Chief Resident in her final year, and then completed a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

She is board certified in four specialties: Family Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Lifestyle Medicine, and Obesity Medicine. She also holds a Master of Business Administration in Strategic Leadership, is a certified Lifestyle Medicine Intensivist, and is a credentialed HIV Specialist. Her Fellow designations from the American Academy of Family Physicians (FAAFP), the American Geriatrics Society (AGSF), and the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (FACLM) reflect recognition by her peers across each of these fields.

What patients notice first, though, is her energy. Dr. Jaqua is known around campus for her warmth and enthusiasm, and, on most days, for singing along to her favorite music as she drives between buildings. Outside the clinic she enjoys reading, hiking, traveling, and playing volleyball with her husband and their daughter, Celine.

Her passion is healthy aging: helping older adults stay active, independent, and connected to the people and activities they love, and building “age-friendly” care in every setting, from the exam room to the wider community.

A Leader in Her Field

Dr. Jaqua is frequently invited to teach other physicians. In 2026 alone she was a featured speaker for the Riverside-San Bernardino Chapter of the California Academy of Family Physicians, co-presented on blood-based biomarkers for Alzheimer’s diagnosis at the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians of California’s 50th Annual Convention, and presented on evidence-based obesity care at the CAFP Population Health & Obesity Conference. The same expertise she shares with colleagues statewide is available to patients right here in Rancho Cucamonga.

What Is a Geriatrician, and Do You Need One?

A geriatrician is a primary care physician with additional, specialized training in the health of older adults, generally people age 65 and older, and especially those managing several conditions at once. Think of it the way a pediatrician cares for children: the body changes with age, and so should the medicine.

Geriatricians understand how aging affects the way conditions show up and how the body responds to treatment. They are experts in how medications interact, in age-related illnesses such as osteoporosis, arthritis, and dementia, and in the subtle changes in balance, strength, mood, and memory that can quietly chip away at independence.

You or a family member may benefit from geriatric care if you:
  • Take five or more medications, or are unsure whether all of them are still needed.
  • Manage several chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, or arthritis.
  • Have fallen, feel unsteady, or worry about falling.
  • Notice changes in memory, thinking, or mood.
  • Are finding it harder to manage daily activities at home.
  • Are a caregiver who needs a partner in planning for a loved one’s care.

What to Expect at the Geriatrics Clinic

Care at the Geriatrics Clinic starts with listening. Visits are built around what matters most to you, whether that is staying in your own home, keeping up with grandchildren, or simply feeling steadier on your feet. From there, Dr. Jaqua and the care team focus on:
  • Comprehensive geriatric assessment — a whole-person review of your physical health, memory and thinking, mood, nutrition, mobility, and home safety, so nothing important falls through the cracks.
  • Managing multiple chronic conditions — coordinating care for diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, lung disease, and other long-term conditions so treatments work together rather than against each other.
  • Medication review and simplification — a careful look at every prescription, over-the-counter product, and supplement to reduce side effects, avoid harmful interactions, and eliminate medicines that are no longer helping.
  • Memory and cognitive health — evaluation of memory concerns, early identification of mild cognitive impairment and dementia, and ongoing support for patients and families living with these conditions.
  • Balance and fall prevention — identifying the reasons behind unsteadiness and building a plan, with therapy, exercise, and home adjustments, to keep you on your feet and confident.
  • Healthy aging and lifestyle medicine — evidence-based guidance on nutrition, physical activity, sleep, weight, and stress, drawing on Dr. Jaqua’s board certifications in Lifestyle and Obesity Medicine.
  • Care planning and caregiver support — help with advance care planning, connecting families to community resources, and making sure caregivers have the information and backup they need.

Geriatric care is a team effort. Nurses, pharmacists, physical and occupational therapists, and social workers all play a role, and the Lewis Center of Aging was designed so those team members are steps away rather than across town.

Everything Under One Roof: The Lewis Center of Aging

For many older adults, the hardest part of healthcare is the logistics: separate appointments at separate addresses, each requiring a ride, a parking spot, and a walk. The Lewis Center of Aging was created as a “one-stop shop” to change that. Located at 11000 Eucalyptus Street in Rancho Cucamonga, it brings together the services seniors use most, so a check-up, a lab draw, and a prescription pickup can happen in a single visit.
